Level Intermediate
Duration 2 days
Zone Ortles Cevedale
This itinerary represents the edge between hiking and alpinism; it’s ideal for those who are well trained and want to start getting closer to high mountain.
Most sections have to be hiked, whilst there is a specific section in which it’s necessary to cross the Careser glacier.
The environment is extremely interesting from a naturalistic point of view and the landscapes are stunning.
Technical description
DAY ONE: meet up with the guide at Rifugio Larcher, in the afternoon. We spend the night at the hut. Elevation gain: 600 m.
DAY TWO: we cross the Careser’s dam over an interesting path (from the naturalistic point of view), we meet many alpine lakes and there’s the possibility to see wildlife in their natural habitat, like chamois, marmots and eagles. Once reached the dam, we climb up to the Careser valley until 3000 m, where we meet the first side of the glacier. We walk over it and reach Bocca di Saent (it’s possible to summit Cima Mezzena in few minutes), then we descend to Rifugio Dorigoni along a wide ridge, then return back to Rabbi Fonti crossing Saent valley (it’s possible to spend the night at Dorigoni hut to add a stop more to the descent).
Elevation gain: 600 m. Loss: 1750 m.
