The Alti Tauri National Park is, with more than 1,800 km², the largest protected area in Central Europe and the Alps. It is located in the Austrian regions of Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol and represents one of the last, vast original landscapes of the Alps. The National Park includes alpine environments, from the mountain horizon to the summit peaks (Grossglockner 3,798 m).
From a geological point of view, the National Park is located in the so-called “window of the Tauern”, an area of the Alps formed in particular by metamorphic rocks. Together with its neighbours Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park (Autonomous Province of Bolzano) and the Zillertaler Alpen Nature Park (Tyrol), the Alti Tauri National Park forms the largest and most continuous protected area in the Alps.
